I knew I wanted to visit Devils Postpile during a family trip to Mammoth Lakes, and with the limited access due to the road reconstruction, only one day would work, so we got our shuttle tickets earlier in the week and caught the first bus this morning. mdawaffe, jstupid, and I really enjoyed being able to see this spectacular rock formation up close as well as all the amazing scenery on our hike from the ranger station to Reds Meadow via Rainbow Falls. With one of the signs missing, we had to do a bit of online homework, but our email has been sent. Thanks so much for highlighting such a unique landscape!

jstupid, mdawaffe, and I capped off a family vacation in Mammoth Lakes with our first visit to Devils Postpile, and we enjoyed great weather for our hike. Although we've seen columns of basalt elsewhere, this compact structure with occasional areas of sinuous curves is certainly striking! We loved the opportunity to circle the entire exposed area, taking in the view from the top and bottom, and after a day trip to Yosemite National Park earlier in the week, it was interesting to compare the evidence left behind by the period of glacial activity. The stretches of polished rock were so smooth! Our observations have been sent, and thanks for the earthcache.

What a neat little spot that we never would have noticed without geocaching! mdawaffe, jstupid, and I were hiking from the ranger station to Reds Meadow via Rainbow Falls, and this was a quick detour at the start. After accidentally leaving my phone back at the condo, I had managed to save the area's caches offline to mdawaffe's phone while waiting for the shuttle just in case we didn't have service in the field, but it was certainly odd to be geocaching without my own device. The bubbling springs were obvious after crossing the river, and we estimated over 500 bubbles in 10 seconds at the most active pool, with about 50 bubbles in 10 seconds at one of the smaller pools. Our email's been sent, and thanks for highlighting this interesting geological spot!

On our way back from Tuolumne Meadows and Mono Lake, mdawaffe and I opted for the scenic route to Mammoth Lakes, and since this cache was right at the exit, I couldn't resist the short walk in the woods. The highly entertaining cache was easy to spot, but its namesake resident had gone walkabout. After a quick look around, we rescued him from the ground nearby and replaced as intended. Thanks so much for the fun hide!

After a great day trip through Yosemite National Park along Tioga Road with a detour to Mono Lake, mdawaffe and I were heading back to Mammoth Lakes, and we always like to stretch our legs at rest areas. An interesting local legend, and thanks for the tour.

After a day trip to Tuolumne Meadows, mdawaffe and I stopped by Mono Lake on our way back to Mammoth Lakes. We enjoyed the exhibits at the visitor center at the west side of the lake, and this walk along the shoreline for an up-close view of the tufa towers was a definite highlight of the day. Such interesting formations made even more eerie knowing they were formed underwater. We noted the various former water level signs as we drove and walked in and made our own calculations as we imagined past landscapes. With few birds this time of year, the wildlife was mostly limited to the dense band of flies at the water's edge, further evidence of this unique ecosystem. Our observations have been sent, and thanks for the earthcache!
Continuing straight from the end of the boardwalk, today's shoreline was at N 37 56.529, W 119 01.756.
The water's edge where we took our matching photo was at N 37 56.530, W 119 01.740.

It was so cool to finally see the otherworldly tufa towers in person after years of coming across pictures or videos of this unique landscape. mdawaffe and I had stopped at the visitor center first for an overview on the geology, and we enjoyed the short loop walk on the interpretive trail in the afternoon light. Not too many birds were around this time of year, but we definitely saw the flies along the water's edge. Our email's been sent, and thanks for highlighting these amazing towers.

mdawaffe and I took advantage of a week in Mammoth Lakes to visit Mono Lake, and I was happy that the road was in good enough condition for my old compact car to handle. Thanks for the quick find on our way to see the tufa towers up close.
