Geocache Description:

Located on the walking trail between Dee Why & Curl Curl beaches. Its reasonably close to a sea cliff, but you shouldnt need to go near the edge, just keep the geo kiddies close. After finding the cache, you can go for a swim at the rock pool or continue the walk along the headland, which has some interesting heathland vegetation and excellent views.

The name of "Dee Why" is shrouded in mystery with some suggesting it relates back to a DY-like rock inscription supposedly of early Spanish origin. Dee Why is also alleged to derive its name from the D and Y shapes of its lagoon at low tide, when seen from some vantage point. However, the name first appears in 1815 on a survey plan by James Meehan shown at present day Harbord, a few suburbs south.

From the Manly Daily 24/02/2006:

"...When Meehan drew a map of the area as part of his survey, he called the un-named bay ``Dy Bay'' but in his notes referred to ``Dy Beach''. Meehan's ``Dy'' was later transcribed as ``DY'', which was subsequently extended to ``Deewhy'' and later still split to form ``Dee Why''. Why Meehan called the area ``Dy'' is a mystery but its unlikely Meehan invented the name because he rarely, if ever, conferred names. Instead, the ``Dy'' name was probaly complete and in existence before Meehan surveyed the area in 1815 and that it may have been an aboriginal word or place name of unknown meaning. How the ``Dy'' name drifted two beaches north to its present location is as big a mystery as the origin of the name itself...."

My theory is that the local aborigines pre-1815 used the name DY to refer to the Dudes' Yonder that often frequent the excellent waves breaking off the rocks just beyond the rock pool.

The cache is located with an excellent vantage point of the surfing action, provided the swell is up. So this cache has a surfing theme, with surfing related goodies inside. Try to keeps swaps in a similar vein, and if you can think of anything else that "DY" might mean, feel free to log your thoughts....
