A whale of a time #2 Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

djcache: Destroyed by fire. Very sad that this long standing cache has been toasted. Not the first of my caches to go that way. I'll free the location up for a local to take on. Hope someone does. The tower needs to be admired.

Geocache Description:

The second in the "A whale of a time" series of caches. This one take you to a viewing platform built for an entirely different purpose from the location at AWOAT #1.
The location however and the structure are far more spectacular.

The whaling industry was in boom times at the time that this location was developed. Benjamin Boyd was a local entrepeneur and industrialist who set to building an entire town bearing his name.

Like all good Australian entrepeneurs though he went bust and skipped the country leaving angry shareholders in his wake.

Not before he constructed this little monument to his good self however. An amazing feat undertaken in trying conditions. His excitement was probably dampened when he was unable to get the structure gazetted as a lighthouse and from then on it was used for the not so environmentally friendly type of whale watching.

This structure is truly amazing, though this was possibly lost on the workers who spent hours and days on end here looking for whales, then signaling to nearby whaling stations when they spotted them. The hours were long and tedious - look for the block of stone with the chequers board carved into its surface on the north side.

After Boyd went bust and left, the Davidson's (of the location of AWOAT #3) used the tower for many years until the late 1920's to assist their operations.

I wish the ladders were still in place, I'd love to go up for a look.

Make sure you look around the point (carefully it's a long way down) as the views are spectacular, and between August and November keep an eye out for whales.

From the first location you need the following information to find the cache.

Find "How many whales were killed?"
...perhaps C0-A0 whales.
A = ?
C = ?

Find "The great whale rush of the 1830's"
Each humpback whale would yield on average XY-40 barrels.
X = ? & Y = ?
E = X + Y
which was worth about D0 pounds when the average annual wage was B0 pounds.
D = ?
B = ?

The cache is located a short walk away at:
S37° 0A.BCD
E149° 5E.BCD (No, it's a coincidence not an error.)

Care should be taken around cliff tops but the cache is nowhere near close enough to be dangerous. I took my 4 y/o when I placed it. Please hide it well.

Original cache contents include log book, fish light keyring, ambulance, fire car, occy strap, scissors, shoelaces. Please trade even or trade up.
