Milyering Well is a historical site located on the western roadside of Yardie Creek Road, just north of Milyering Visitor Centre & marked by an old water tank and remnants of fencing. It was particularly important when Yardie Station was in operation.
The well itself still has water in it so use caution if you have children with you. If you look carefully into the well (through the mesh), you may see some blind gudgeon (Milyeringa veritas) a small fish endemic to the area. They are entirely blind, lack pigmentation with little to no scales and reach a standard length of about 5cm. The generic name "Milyeringa", is the type locality, taken from Milyering, obvious I know, but the bit that I find super intersting is that it's specific name "Veritas" is latin meaning truth an allusion to a quote attributed to the Ancient Greek philosopher Democritus (c.460 — c.370 BC) "Truth lies at the bottom of a well, the depth of which, alas! gives but little hope of release.”
To find the cache you will need to find a path under the shades of the tree, I suggest coming in from the road side as you will pretty much have a direct path (see hint for more). You are looking for a 600g red staminade screw top container, so plenty of room for some swag. Watch both overhead and on the ground for some crazy critters that might be about as the ground is covered in thick leaf litter.
Often you will see wildlife such as kangaroos, emus and even echidnas in this area so keep and eye out. I won't mention the snakes, but hey that's what comes with geocaching, particulary in these areas!! One other things that is a bit easier to spot is the fossils, so many interesting bits around this cache.... and what are those weird black and red bugs?!
Feeling peckish... drive just 1.5 kms south to the Milyering Visitors Center. There you can purchase cold drinks & ice creams, and find out a lot of information about the area... worth the stop especially with kids! If your a collector of The Auscoinswest souvenir coins, you can even collect a Humpback Whale one whilst you are there!
