The memorial is in Australia’s first landscaped Romantic garden cemetery, which employed the main principles of Victorian-era landscaping such as arranging the layout to follow the contours of the land, adopting curved paths and allowing for vistas (“Cemeteries, Our Heritage”, Celestina Sagazio (Ed), National Trust).
The posted coordinates will take you to the Springthorpe memorial. Although now showing signs of decay, this magnificent memorial was built in 1897 by Dr John Springthorpe on the death of his young wife Annie. The memorial itself cost £4,000 and a further £6,000 was spent on associated works, both very extravagant sums at the time. The white marble statues were by expatriate Australian sculptor Bertram Mackennal, the stained glass roof by Alfred Fisher of Melbourne, and Professor Tucker of Melbourne University advised on the various inscriptions.
