Kaiapoi is a small dormitory town 20 kilometres north of
Christchurch. It is sited on the banks of the Kaiapoi River. When
the first Europeans arrived in 1850 there were only about 50 Maoris
living in the area. Earlier, a large Maori population lived at
Kaiapohia Pa (from which the town got its name) 8 kilometres north
of Kaiapoi but they were almost totally wiped out in a raid in 1832
by war chief Te Rauparaha.
Kaiapoi became a town in it’s own right in 1868. It was the
river that gave early importance to Kaiapoi. There were no roads
and the railway didn’t reach Kaiapoi until 1872. As many as 70
coastal trading vessels operated to and from the port of Kaiapoi,
mooring on both banks of the river adjacent to and even upstream of
the present road bridge.
