Geocache Description:

A boat, a horse and your own legs will carry you to this ancient view.

NOTE: This is a virtual cache so to log it you have to provide answers to the three questions below. If you log this as found WITHOUT answering the questions as directed below, then your log will be deleted.

I was very surprised to find that there were no caches on Inis Mór, the largest of the three Aran islands. Well, now there is.

The best way to get here, assuming you don't live here (and since only 800 or so folks actually do, chances are you don't) is by taking the Queen of Aran II from Ros a Mhíl (Rossaveal), a village 20 miles west of Galway City. (You'll want the Queen, rather than one of the other ferries. It's the only one owned by Islanders themselves.)

Once on the island, hire a horse cart. You could rent a bike (not bad) or hire a "mini van" (Bah. Stinky, noisy things they are.) but the horse cart is the most enjoyable and memorable way to experience the island. At the end of your ride a short walk takes you to the cache site.

Once you reach the upper part of the fort there is a plaque in the doorway with text in both Irish and English. To log this cache send me an email (use the "Send Message" link on my profile page) with answers to the following 3 questions:

  • How short was the walk? (As the crow flies from the the building at the start of the trail to the actual fort. (You may want to make your own waypoint at the building so you can see how far you are from it once you reach the fort.)
  • How long is the fall? (Check in the building at the start of the trail.)
  • What 3-word phrase is identical in both portions of the plaque? (Hint: It's not in either Irish or English.)

Now that you've logged the cache, crawl the last bit of the route (Everybody does!) and see the view you really came to see!
