Geocache Description:

Find statues, memorials and plaques commemorating the life and voyages of Captain Cook.

Captain Cook is arguably one of the world's most famous seafarers. His three, famous, Pacific voyages changed the history of Australia and New Zealand. But as well as his most well known exploits, he was responsible for charting many other places and leading the expedition to measure the transit of Venus, which was of great scientific importance at the time.

Cook was born in Marton in Yorkshire in the north of England in 1728. He went on to live and work in various places nearby, before going to sea. After sailing coal ships in the North Sea, and rising through the ranks to Captain, he eventually embarked on his first round-the-world voyage in 1768.

On the last of his three great Pacific voyages he was killed in Hawaii in 1779, during a dispute with the local inhabitants.

His legacy includes many places named by him and named after him. Some of these places contain some item commemorating his association with that place.

The coordinates are for the Cook Memorial in Whitby in Yorkshire. This seems to be a good place to start as the town was his home for much of his adult life. Indeed, there are many other Cook related places in the town and nearby.

To complete this locationless cache simply take a photo including the item (memorial, statue, plaque etc.) and GPS, and record the co-ords of the place. It would be nice also, to describe the historical association of the place with Captain Cook.

Where to find Captain Cook related memorials?

  • North Yorkshire, England
  • London
  • New Zealand
  • Australia
  • Alaska
  • Oregon
  • Atlantic and Pacific coast of Canada
  • Many Pacific Islands including Hawaii
  • Russia
  • All over the seven seas, HM Bark Endeavour

As Cook travelled widely, this is by no means a complete list of areas, and I'll probably have to add to the list in time.

In the interests of fairness: HM Bark Endeavour can be logged by more than one person, as long as the location it is found in has not been logged before for this cache.
