The sign here says this was the site of the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition in 1889-90. The main aims of the exhibition was to promote closer trade between New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific Islands.
Other exhibiting nations included the UK, USA, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy and Japan.
The buildings were temporary and after the exhibition closed, they were dismantled and the materials sold.
