This spot is well deserving of a cache, but traditional caches keep disappearing from here. I was delighted to be awarded a virtual cache because I knew this is exactly where I would place it.

The cache is hidden at a wonderful memorial that commemorates a very significant event in New Zealand's history - women winning the right to vote.
On 19 September, 1893, New Zealand women won an historic victory - the right to vote in parliamentary elections. New Zealand became the first self-governing country in the world to recognize this freedom for all women.
The campaign for the vote had begun as early as 1869. The suffragists knew the vote was a vital step in their struggle for equal rights. It would give them the political power to hasten social reform.
In 1887 Kate Sheppard of Christchurch led an intensive seven year campaign to secure the vote for women. During this time she wrote articles, distributed pamphlets, spoke at public meetings and lobbied politicians. She inspired many women to join the cause and with increasing support produced three major petitions. The 1898 petition with 81,872 signatures was the largest ever gathered in Australasia.
Women rejoiced in their victory in 1893. At the next election, two months later, seventy percent exercised their new right.
Kate Sheppard is a familiar face to many as her likeness graces one side of the New Zealand $10 note. A gesture of recognition for all that she achieved.
