Rangitoto is a volcanic island near Auckland in the Hauraki Gulf. It is a symmetrical volcano capped by central scoria cones and it reaches a height of 260m. Rangitoto formed during two phases of eruptions that may have lasted only 5–10 years, about 600 years ago.
You can catch the ferry from Auckland, take your own boat or even kayak over for a day exploring the island and its' many tracks. Head to the summit to claim this virtual and to admire the stunning views over Auckland and beyond. Take plenty of water, food and sunscreen as there is nothing available on the island.
The co-ordiantes will take you to a structure at the very top of Rangitoto. To claim this cache you have 3 tasks to complete:
1. Take a photo of yourself, your geocaching name, or your GPS from inside the structure or the viewing platform just a few steps away and post this with your log.
2. Email/message us the 6 numbers written on the green tag (not the orange tag!) inside the structure.
3. Read the information signs inside the structure and email/message us how many mines were laid by the German raider Orion. The information boards explain how Rangitoto summit was used during WWII as a base for harbour defence fire control and as a radar station.
Now you have hiked all the way up here sit down and enjoy the views
