With the need to provide land for arriving settlers in the 1840's the New Zealand Company purported to buy land in Taranaki and other regions. Te Atiawa, whose rohe was part of the Fitzroy Block here, were generally opposed to it for historical and Crown reasons. However in 1844 a Deed of Agreement was signed despite ongoing concerns.
Very little is known about Matini Tupoki (Te Puhia) who was a signatory to the Fitzroy Deed of sale. During 1847 he lived at Moturoa and had interests in the Fitzroy Block, was at Te Kawau Pa in 1862, was part owner of Native Reserve 21 in 1886. He lived at Te Henui and owned cattle and died in 1876.
