Geocache Description:

Birth Place of Kenneth Slessor

Kenneth Slessor, one of Australia's most important modern poets, was born on 27th March, 1901 in St Kilda, the house which once stood on this spot.

St. Kilda was a semi-detached house built in 1878 by Charles McInnes, Slessor's grandfather, a builder who migrated from Inverness, Scotland. McInnes was later an Aldeman on the first East Orange Council and one-time Mayor.

His poem "Five Bells", was written in memory of a friend who drowned in Sydney Harbour , and is commemorated in John Olson's painting "Salute to Five Bells" which is displayed in the north foyer of the Sydneys Opera house's Concert Hall.
