A great place to enjoy the scenery, learn some local history, have a picnic, take a walk, go for a swim, find a geocache, or just relax... Waro Rocks!!
Lake Waro & Waro Limestone Scenic Reserve are on the Northern outskirts of Hikurangi, approximately 10 minutes north of Whangarei. Once upon a time, Waro & Hikurangi were distinctly separate communities & had quite the rivalry between their rugby teams.
For lakeside parking, picnic areas & toilets, take the King St. exit from Hwy 1 & the first road (un-named) on the left – go slowly as it is easy to miss! Go past the rubbish transfer station & skate park SLOWLY, as there are big potholes ;)
There is a track which goes right around both the lake & reserve, an easy 2.2km in total, well worth the walk to see the various limestone formations and read the informative signs ( and find other caches! ) Or for the less energetic, a short loop around either the lake or the scenic reserve should each only take 15-20 minutes. There is a carpark on SH1 at the reserve entrance (S 35° 35.161 E 174° 16.997 ) , but no ablutions. Dogs are allowed around the lakeside council reserve/ lake loop, but not within the DOC Scenic Reserve
The cache is out of view from prying eyes, 17m from "bizarre" sign .
