The term “dinosaur” is derived from two Greek words - deinos meaning “terrible” and saurus which means “lizard” - and was first used by English Biologist Sir Richard Owen in 1846. Variations for different species names come from a distinctive characteristic or where a fossil was first found.
Diplodocus lived over 152 million years ago and is one of the largest and longest dinosaurs so far discovered. Though it walked on four sturdy legs, its size and shape (a long neck and tail) is so unusual palaeontologists think it likely they had an avian respiratory system to help them breath.
Diplodocus would have spent its days browsing on trees, ferns and bushes from low levels to around 4 metres high though reconstructions suggest they could use their tail as a tripod prop while balancing on their rear legs to reach up to 11 metres. Like giraffes, it is believed that Diplodocus developed a long neck as a feeding advantage.
