Geocache Description:

When you park up very near to GZ, look a bit to the south and there is a flat spot at the base of the hill. I was told years ago that this was the spot for a coastal radar station in WW2, warning of planes or ships on the approaches to Wellington, Cook Straight or the Marlborough Sounds.

A bit of reading later and I can deduce that this radar site existed from 1942 to 1943 as part of the Chain Overseas Low (COL) coastal radar sites set up around - about 15 were established of the 36 planned. You can read about the one at Piha here - (visit link) and some stories of the one at Farewell Spit here - (visit link)

The cache itself is a 200ml Sistema. Ample parking each side. Good luck. Watch out for the ditch.
