This series of caches will take you on a trip along Baanip Boulevard's walking/cycling path. Baanip Blvd was officially opened on June 3, 2015, approximately 6 months ahead of schedule. The boulevard was designed to link the southern section of the Geelong Ring Rd to the Armstrong Creek growth area as well as the existing suburbs of Waurn Ponds & Grovedale. The walking/cycling path was included as part of this construction and can be accessed from the Eastern end at the intersection with the Surfcoast Hwy or from the western end via Boundary road, which intersects with Ghazeepore Rd just south of the Railway line. If you want to do this series as a 1 way trip I suggest starting at the Boundary Rd end to avoid doubling back.
Baanip Boulevard was named after Willem Baa Nip (1836 – 1885) also known as King Billy, William Gore or Billy Wa-wha. King Billy was a member of the local Wadawurrung (Wathaurung) tribe. He was born in 1836 on the banks of a lagoon believed to be located in central Geelong near what is now Little Malop Street. He was the last surviving member of the Wadawarrung to witness colonisation. His grave is in Geelong's western cemetery. A mural of Willem Baa Nip is featured in Dennys Place, Central Geelong. This series is designed to take you along the path that (due to living very close by), we regularly enjoy during the warmer months, but also to add a few easy caches to the area for the stats afficionado's (like me) who often find themselves looking for nice easy caches for achievements like streak finds. Please return each cache as found, be aware of muggles and let me know if there are any maintenance issues.
Please note: As at 01/06/2022 the coordinates for this cache were updated after relocating 15m West due to high muggle risk with even more foot/vehicle traffic in the area since the cache was placed. The terrain rating was upped to T1.5, the wheelchair attribute was removed, hint was updated and the difficulty rating was lowered due to the decreased risk of muggle exposure.
