Pohangina’s first school was originally located near Holley’s Hill (the first hill that you encounter after the Raumai junction when traveling north along Pohangina Road - see Wildbore 15). Subsequently a more fit-for-purpose school house was built on the site, close to Adsett’s timber mill, which began operation there in 1893. In early 1895, the school was re-erected in this site in Pohangina Village. In 1972, this school was closed, as were other schools in the district, with students having the choice of Awahou School, across the river, or Ashhurst School. This photo shows the school in 1971, when the roll was 12.
