Geocache Description:

A place where training is now done, and where trains used to go...

The YMCA Southern Farm Training is based just south of Winton at the A & P Society Farm.

YMCA Southern Farm Training offers Youth Guarantee Programmes for 16 to 19 year olds to obtain the National Certificate in the Primary Sector and National Certificate in Agriculture.

The Kingston flyer also travelled through here between Invercargill and Kingston.

Construction of the track began in 1864, with the Makarewa to Winton section opening in February 1871.

There were 5 stations on this section; Ryal Bush, Wilsons Crossing, Lochiel, Thomsons Crossing, and Gap Road.

This line was open for over a century, initially to provide a link to the Central Otago gold fields, but a declining interest in train travel and the increase of the motor vehicle usage, they eventually closed the line in 1979.

The cache is an undisclosed size, but should be an easy find for the experienced geocacher.
