The Cataract Gorge is arguably Launceston's most famous and finest tourist attraction. Located just minutes from the centre of town, the gorge has towering, near vertical walls of fractured dolerite which contain the waters of the South Esk River.
At the First Basin, deep still waters provide a picturesque natural lake adjacent to the Victorian gardens of the Cliff Grounds. Further down stream the waters bubble and boil about the boulders. Towards the Kings Bridge, the river slows again to one of deep calm and reflection.
You may be fortunate enough to witness the gorge in flood - truly a sight to behold - the rumble and raw power are enough to take your breath away.
