Founded by local riders and the Wellington City Council in 2008-2009, the Miramar Track Project aims to build an active trail network based around the slopes of Mt Crawford. Multiple tracks and trails for people of all skills levels have been built in this area. Many trails in this area have had their name inspired by the nearby Mt Crawford prison. Some of these tracks include:
Bootleg- A two-way track connecting Nevay Road with Jail Brake. At approximately 690m in length, this single track is often used by bikers heading up to the start of Jail Brake. This track is not recommended for high speed downhill riding as it is a two-way, so there is potential to collide with someone heading uphill.
Conviciton- An 830m intermediate grade track. This is a track for primarily riding uphill to connect to Bootleg. Like Bootleg, this track is also two-way and shared by both bikers and walkers. Also like Bootleg, it is not recommended for high speed downhill riding. The beginning of this track starts near the grassy area of the northern point of Darlington Road. The cache is also hidden just a few meters near the start of this track.
Jail Brake- Perhaps the most well known track in this area, Jail Brake is a high speed downhill only track for bikers. It consists of jumps, steep gradients and banked corners. On the cross country scale, the track is graded 'expert' while on the downhill scale, the track is graded 'intermediate'. The start/top of this track is accessable about 100m from the white concrete blocks situated on Main Road, near the end of Bootleg. The track is about 620m long and flows down the western side of the Maupuia Reserve. This track is doable with both a downhill bike or cross country bike. The track can be extremely slippery and muddy after a rainfall and commitment is needed for the banked corners. If you wish to attempt this trail, you need to be a competent rider and it is recommended to have had a lot of experience riding. If you believe you can do this track, go for it and have fun!
