Anglesea Power Station
The nearby power station operated from 1969 to 2015, providing electricity to Alcoa's Point Henry aluminium smelter. The thermal power station was supplied with coal from the nearby open cut mine and had one steam turbine with a capacity of 150 megawatts of electricity.
While power (the rate at which work is done) is now measured using watts, it was previously measured as horsepower. Horsepower (hp) was coined in the 18th century by Scottish engineer James Watt to compare the output of engines with the number of horses they could replace.
As an example, the Anglesea Power Station could provide power at a rate equal to the work that 201,153 horses could do!
