In the late 19th century over 500 people lived in the remote gold mining township of Cassilis in the mountains of East Gippsland. Today, the area of the Cassilis township is a ghost town, inhabited by a few locals, a winery and some secluded holiday homes, none of which were original Cassilis dwellings. In a small gully that was 'over the hill' from the Cassilis township, is the Cassilis Cemetery, last resting place and remnant of the Cassilis township.
