Tanked (Auckland) Traditional Cache
exodus722: We used to visit Auckland regularly but maintaining this cache has become an issue lately. I hope someone closer places another cache here - it's a great spot!

You are looking for a 175ml Sistema, tucked away in its little house. Stealth may be required, as this is a popular high muggle area. The cache contains a log book only, so bring your own writing implement.
I always wondered why this area was called Three Kings, and it was only when I was doing research for this cache that I discovered that the Three Kings are no more. Big King Reserve features the largest of the three cones originally in this area, but the other two cones have been quarried for their red pumas, which is still evident in the area. Below the reserve are the remains of the quarry, which is now being filled in, and will eventually support high rise housing - or so I'm told. The reserve today is an off-leash, doggie paradise, and it's not uncommon to find 20 or 30 dogs in the area at any one time. Professional dog walkers use the reserve during the week, so often dogs outnumber humans! So if you are terrified of canines, best you don't go hunting this cache... For me, the big attraction of this spot is the wonderful views from the summit. The dominant feature here is the huge water tank, which is not in daily use any more, but is part of Auckland's emergency water supply. It's definitely worth a wander up just to enjoy the outlook. Also the Maori earthworks are still visible on the slopes, as well as several old volcanic vents. Take your time here, enjoy the surroundings, and enjoy the hike to the top. Oh, and if you think it's a bit steep, I can report that on one visit, I came across a stooped, elderly gentleman, making his way up the sealed track at snails pace on a walking frame! Amazing, and a great example of never giving up... * At the time of placement, the cache also contained a red racing car toy for the speedy FTF. Good luck!*
