#2 THE OLD SCHOOL BELL
This site was selected, as per traditional military practice dating back to the Romans, where large establishments were built on a rise or hill so that grey water from ablutions, cooking, laundry etc could be drained away, thereby lessening the outbreak of disease and sickness. There was also the advantage of it being firmer underfoot.
The other advantage of this area was the availability of construction material, with good quality & quantity of basalt rock that could be easily extracted & used by the stone masons.
Unfortunately because of the location it also meant it was extremely windy.
The basalt rock from which the dorms were made kept them nice and cool during summer, and a refuge from the heat & dust. But come the winter months, without heating, there was no escaping the bitter cold.
From the parking area, you can see mounted in front of the current school office (previously the living quarters for teaching staff), the original school bell, made in Glasgow in 1863. The bell was recently returned to it’s original site, what is now Sunbury Primary School, after spending many years at the former Asylum/Caloola buildings
From GZ you have a great view of Sunbury & the surrounding areas.
You are looking for a small container, suitably camouflaged to it's surroundings.
