At this cache you can see kareao - supplejack, ripogonum scandens. It is the mass of vines you see impeding access if you tried to walk much further off track. Young supplejack shoots are a good food source. They taste much like peas or asparagus and can been eaten raw or cooked. Not being able to find young shoots is a good indicator of the presence of possums, as they like supplejack shoots too. Older stems are wooden, and not edible. Maori used supplejack root medicinally for severe rheumatism and to induce abortions.
