The Grand Theatre was built in the Samnite times but completely rebuilt in the second century BC and later restored several times: around 80 BC, in conjunction with the construction of the Teatro Piccolo, several works concerned mainly the area of the auditorium, enlarged about ten meters, while, during the Augustan period, there was a total renovation .
The scene was completely rebuilt after the earthquake of 62 AD, which damaged part of the structure; was then buried with the rest of the city, under a blanket of ash and lapilli in 79 AD, due to the eruption of Vesuvius.
Thanks to a careful restoration, nowadays it is used in the summer for musical and theatrical performances.
