The SS President Coolidge was a converted luxury liner that was pressed into service during WWII by the Americans as a troopship. In October 1942, as the captain was navigating the ship into Luganville, the boat struck two mines in the channel. Knowing the boat was going to be lost, the captain attempted to beach the boat so that the troops could disembark safely. Of the 5 340 men onboard, all but two survived. As the boat fetched up on reef, it gradually sank and slid down the underwater slope, where it continues to sit today. The SS President Coolidge is one of the best and most accessible wreck dives in the world.
