The Gold Coast’s Sister City Agreement with Takasu, Japan was officially established in November 1995.
Imouto means "little sister". Takasu is a small rural town located in the Kamikawa District in the centre of Hokkaido, the northern most Japanese island. It has a population of 7631 and its major business operations are primarily agricultural in nature.
The majority of tourism to Takasu takes the form of ‘park golf’ players from the wider Kamiwana region. ‘Park golf’ is a popular sport among the elderly in Japan, and is a cross between putt-putt and real golf. Takasu is home to four ‘park golf’ courses. In addition to ‘park golf’, the town of Takasu holds an annual half marathon called the Takasu Jogging Festival. It also holds two cross-country ski races and a summer festival named Nekka Festa.
Takasu has a student exchange programme with the City of Gold Coast and sends a delegation of junior high school students once a year. In reciprocity to that, the town of Takasu extends an invitation to students from the Gold Coast to experience what Japan has to offer.
Takasu Gardens were established in 2004 in preparation for a re-signing ceremony held here in November 2005 to mark the 10th Anniversary of Sister City relations. The function was attended by a citizens group from Takasu as well as their volunteer fire fighters, and many Gold Coast citizens who have a connection with Takasu. The event was also attended by Takasu Mayor Sato and Councillor Syouji. Former Mayor Stevens, on behalf of Gold Coast Mayor Clark, re-signed the Sister City Relations Agreement.
The gardens themselves have three distinct zones, each with their own distinct planting and arrangement. The central zone which includes GZ is an off-leash dog exercise area with water supply for Geo Pooch to have a little drink. It also has a small pavilion with picnic table but is comprised of mostly open area with a perimeter path.
Given its predominant use as a dog exercise park it is best to avoid this area on weekends and public holidays as it can get very busy with muggles and their unchained four-legged friends! It can also be busy of an early morning and late afternoon but during the remainder of the week day hours the area should be mostly muggle free.
