A little-known but beautiful stretch of rocky coast that's part of Wilson Head near Ocean Beach, Denmark.
Wilson Head is the rocky and rugged section of coast between Ocean Beach and Lights Beach, and is part of the spectacular coastline in this area. To whet your appetite, see some of the information here:
http://www.rainbowcoast.com.au/areas/denmark/wilsonhead.htm
GZ will take you to a beautiful stretch of the coastline that very few people know about or ever visit. But geocaching will bring you there! There is a good trail to get there, but you need to know about it, and we only discovered it by accident when we were out exploring one day. The coast near the cache is features a large shelf of massive rock, against which the Southern Ocean crashes, often creating some spectacular spray. Running all the way across from left to right in front of this shelf of rock, is a large protected area filled with large stones that have been rounded by the crashing surf over the years, and look like giant marbles. For this reason we've called it "Marble Alley". Perhaps it has an official name, so please tell us what it is if you know!
To get here, take Ocean Beach Rd from South Coast Hwy, and drive all the way to the end of the paved section, and continue past the Surf Lifesaving Club. Follow the wide dirt road all the way to the very end, which will bring you to the Sinker Bay lookout. Here you can turn around, and when heading back to Denmark, the trailhead is about a hundred meters or so on the left hand side of the dirt road, and you can leave your vehicle right there (S 35° 02.130 E 117° 19.847).
Getting to GZ involves a short hike of around 1km, which should take you just over 15 minutes. The first section is a sandy uphill climb, but the expansive views from the top of Wilson Head back to Ocean Beach make it well worthwhile! From there, you'll descend slowly back to the coast. There's a wide trail that goes almost all the way to the waterline, so simply follow this to the end, and the cache is just a few meters off the trail. No bush bashing is required, and right near the cache is an ideal vantage point to sit and enjoy the coastline. Count on a 30 minute round trip, plus however long you want to spend exploring the area. In low tide, you can walk over the giant marbles, and if you're adventurous you can even clamber west over the rocks all the way to nearby Walton Point.
Cache is a clear plastic 400ml sistema container, hidden in the middle of a waist-high rock formation (see the picture in the image gallery). We have deliberately made it easy to find, because this cache is all about the location, and we placed it here to share another jewel of the rainbow coast, and to help bring other geocachers here to enjoy this wonderful location.
