William Apes was a native American Indian, ordained Methodist minister, writer and activist of the Pequot tribe. William Elisha Apes who ended up in NZ was either his son or much younger brother. He arrived on the Ajax, but mutinied and had the ship put into Port Otago where he loaded a whaleboat and deserted in 1838. The next mention is 1844 when he married Mana Punahere of Ngai Tahu and they had 6 or 7 children (again records are sketchy). There is a photo of their son giant James (Tiemi) Apes on: http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/photograph/456/tiemi-apes-beside-a-whale-boat. William Apes is buried in Karitane.
Part of a series along Apes Rd. Gravel road, passable by car. Places available to pull over near caches, but take care with sharp bends. Lovely views along most of the road. Best parking in gateway west of site. 50ml.
