Part of Whangaroa Geoexplore; a series of geocaches placed around Whangaroa harbour.
For this cache you will need some kind of boat, such as a kayak or dinghy. don't attempt to swim!
It is easer to climb up the island from the south-east side, as the cache is up there and not down by the water's edge.
This cache is a plastic huney pot! it has a note book and little pencil in it and and few swappable thingies.
Red Island is where the famous sinking of the Boyd which shook the north happened in 1809. Maori attacked the Captain and crew on land and took over the ship, killing most of the people on board before accidentallly setting the ship on fire. The Boyd drifted down the Harbour and came aground off Red Island and burnt to the water line. there were only 4 suvivers from the ship, a woman, two infants and a teenage boy, all got rescued by Alexander Berry who went to investigate reports of the disaster and found it only too true.
