Geocache Description:

A cache placed at the heart of Southland Football and the home of the ILT artificial turf

. When John Turnbull Thomson donated the block of land on Tay Street to the city of Invercargill, little did he know that many years later this would be named Turnbull Thomsen Park and it would become the home of Soutland Football. Now well known throughout Invercargill, the playing fields, the brand new changing rooms and club-room building, the land also boosts Southland’s very own Football Turf, thanks in part to ILT, and is dubbed ‘The Turf’ in football circles. Southland Football is part of the New Zealand Football hierarchy, and is responsible for the clubs in Southland. Southland Football holds the regional competitions for men, women and junior grades. While for some years it had its own Premier Division Men Team (called ‘Spirit’), most of the young players from that team have moved onto bigger and brighter things, and although it’s sad to see some promising young players leave the region, it’s a testament to the staff at Southland Football that these youngsters have been making ‘the grade’ – for its Southland Footballs objective to give ‘up and coming players’ the solid foundation they need to succeed in the world of football.
