Geocache Description:

Welcome to the

HIGH COUNTRY RAIL TRAIL

A historic railway line running
 along Albury Wodonga's Lake Hume.

Stripped of rails and sleepers the old railway line now provides a unique 35km gravel recreational trail for walkers, cyclists and horse riding enthusiasts who want to enjoy a breath of fresh air in a tranquil countryside setting. The 8km section between Tallangatta and Old Tallangatta is sealed.

The High Country Rail Trail is an old railway line steeped in history dating back to 1887, providing rail services from Wodonga to Cudgewa until 1978, and was used extensively for transporting material for the Snowy Mountain Scheme in the 1960's.

The Rail Trail is a community-driven project.  All work and fundraising has been undertaken by volunteers.

This power trail was set with the cyclist in mind, there are few park and grab caches but most are only accessible by bicycle, walking or horse, NO vehicles are allowed on the trail at any time.

The official website for the Rail Trail can be found by clicking the "Related Web Page" under the cache heading.

If traversing the entire trail (43km), please take adequate water and provisions. Snakes are a common sight along the path in the warmer months so please take care, and is recommended to carry a small first aid kit including a bandage fit for treating snake bite, as well as a mobile phone with decent coverage.

Most importantly, get out and enjoy the trail !!!
