DESERT CACHING 101
Before heading out into the desert in search of a distant cache one needs to take a few precautionary measures to ensure that you will return safely.
Some of these precautionary measures include:
Car in good condition with a full tank of fuel
Never go alone
Have recovery gear
A fully charged mobile phone
And the most important CARRY SUFFICIENT WATER
HOW MUCH WATER MUST I CARRY?
As a minimum I carry 3 liters of water per person for a day’s drive, this in addition to the fruit juice and sodas that I have also packed for the trip
Remember to carry spare water for your car as well. A 4.5Liter container filled with water should be kept permanently in your car as this can replenish your radiator and can even be used to wash your hands after changing a tyre
SURVIVAL TIPS
1. Learn to ration sweat, not water. By staying in the shade, limiting activity to cooler times such as night
2. Sipping water does not get it to the brain and vital organs. Take a good drink when you need it
3. Keep in the shade for as long as possible
4. Stay with your vehicle or otherwise make yourself visible.
NOTE: The cache can only be claimed if the log book is signed
