This cache celebrates Eric Powardy (1927-2003)
Eric Powardy was a shearer at Gluepot. He was well known as a storyteller and a prankster, playing tricks on new shearers and delighting children with his yarns and jokes.
His special interests were native plants and birds. As a member of the Australian Plants Society his self-taught skills in plant identification were greatly admired. He loved the outdoors and spent hours wandering the scrub enjoying all aspects of the natural world around him.
Evidently Eric was driving back from Waikerie to resume shearing, having consumed a fair amount of "Waikerie Dark", a rough port wine produced in the local winery. The road was slippery after some rain and he lost control of his vehicle, either turning 180 degrees or 360 degrees and hitting a tree (extract from Gluepot Remembered by Don Gobbett).
This incident occurred on a perfectly straight stretch of road and Eric survived unscathed. However a sign appeared at the site, obviously erected by someone wanting to repay Eric for his pranks.
Don't drink and drive like Eric. Drive straight.
