Geocache Description:

Ohinemuri River Historic area

There are the remains of the old mining works beside the small Dam

GOLD DREDGING HISTORIC RESERVE
Reserve Description
The historic reserve accommodates the concrete ruins, mostly foundation, of
what was the Waihi Gold Dredging Plant. The dredging company started work in
1900 to extract ore from within the Ohinemuri River bed adjacent to Lot 11 DPS
308287. The Historical Places Trust has placed (2006) the site in its historic
places register.
The reserve was created from a subdivision undertaken by Council when it
created a number of lifestyle blocks from land it had acquired initially as a site for
wastewater treatment; the land was not required as a treatment facility.
The site today is grassed over, some of the area has been modified by farming
practises over the years, and it is currently grazed by a neighbouring landowner
Access to the reserve can be made over a ROW off the end of Lawrence road or
by a Waitete stream bank walk off the end of Dean Crescent, an industrial estate
off SH2.
Location
The Lawrence Road, historic reserve is situated at the confluence of the
Ohinemuri River and the Waitete Stream on the south western end of Waihi township. (visit link)

Welcome to Waihi Walkways
Our Mission

... is to create a series of linked public walkways around the Waihi and Ohinemuri District, for good health and for appreciation and enjoyment of our wonderful natural environment.

The walkways will provide access to the Ohinemuri River and tributaries. Waihi Walkways is committed to the environmental enhancement of each area - appropriate to its ambience and history; with riparian plantings, river protection and restoration of indigenous biodiversity whenever possible. These walkways will link with existing bush tracks and Department of Conservation walkways and other public land.

Additionally, the social and cultural heritage values and features of each area, as they are identified, will be protected, preserved, interpreted and honoured.

This is our long term contribution to our community and a part of the upsurge of interest in walkways, ecology and history throughout New Zealand.
