The cache is camouflaged against muggles and hidden in a bush in Doyles Gardens, Hurstville. This is a quiet spot to bring the smaller geokids to play in a safe and shady reserve with play equipment. Bring your own pen and please replace it as you found it, as this is a high muggle area.
Originally called Thomas Street Reserve, it was renamed Doyle Gardens in 1984. The reserve was dedicated to the memory of James and Mary Doyle, who owned the property from 1902 until it was resumed by the Housing Commission in 1944-45 for a housing estate.
James Doyle originated from Ireland. He migrated to NSW in 1884, met and married Mary, moved to Newtown for a few years but later disposed of the Newtown home due to the great depression in 1890. The Doyles later purchased a house and 5 acres of land at Warwick Street, Hurstville and set up a market garden.
James Doyle worked the market garden until age and the depression of 1929-32 forced him to cease work in 1930. He died at St George District Hospital on 9 July 1934 aged 71 years. Mary Doyle died on 4 August 1941, aged 81 years. Congratulations to Slinky Skink FTF. Quick work!
