The structure was built as a safety measure for two main
reasons: the increasing number of pedestrians who had to cross the
highway to get to and from the Plimmerton Railway Station, and the
dramatic increase in vehicle traffic through the area. Both are the
result of the recent huge popularity of suburbs and towns north of
Porirua and up the Kapiti Coast for people working in Wellington.
The housing boom and the further economic development of the whole
coastal region have meant crossing a main highway in this kind of
location was a risky business.
The overbridge – designed only for foot traffic – is
a metal and concrete structure high enough to allow safe passage
for the large trucks (and the occasional house on the back of them)
that ply the highway. To compensate for its height, the walkways to
the path at the top zigzag fairly steeply up the side, undoubtedly
providing a short fitness challenge for commuters and school
children traveling to and from Wellington. Other children who go to
St Theresa’s School just north of the overbridge, but live on
the western side of the highway in Plimmerton or arrive by train,
also use it to get to their school.
