Fawcett's Creek
Forest
Take a walk through a small rainforest that borders on the village
of Kyogle. This forest has been regenerated and is an example of
the previous vegetation that once dominated the area.
In the 1930's, the area was planted with Hoop Pines, which are now
tall, magnificent trees. These trees can grow up to 60m high, and
live for about 450 years. They don't produce cones until they are
200 years old, and are very slow growing. There is a huge variety
of other trees, some labeled with nameplates - a lovely walk for
any amateur dendrologists.
This is a very peaceful area, so close to town. I have done this
walk dozens of times, and have never encountered a muggle! Plenty
of different bird make their home here - from ducks on the creek,
to whipbirds that you very rarely see, but often hear.
Please note that like most of this region, you should be wary of
snakes when walking through the bush. There are also a couple of
small narrow bridges and a creek very close by - keep the kids
close! Area will be a little slippery when wet, and shouldn't be
attempted in times of flooding.
You'll find WP1 close to the parking area, which is located just
off the Summerland Way. WP1 will give you the location of WP2, and
half of the co-ords of the final cache. WP2 holds the rest of the
information you need to easily get to the booty. You will walk just
under 1km return. Please read the card inside the lid of each
waypoint (including the final cache). All waypoint coordinates have
been averaged over a few visits. There are some areas of thick tree
cover, which may hinder the signal on some GPSr units.
