Geocache Description:

Otawa Trig, Higest point in the "Western" Bay. Terrain is steep in a few places, particularly the start. You will reach an altitude of 1820 feet.

This is a one and a half to two and a half hour each way walk, be prepared, not particularly challenging except for the initial climb, muddy in places, use appropriate footwear.

Start from the junction of (Western end, part of it is a paper road) Reids Road and Upper Papamoa Road. From Tauranga, travel down Welcome Bay Road from either SH 2 or 29. Turn into Rocky Cuting Road (Left from SH 2 or Right from SH 29), travel up Rocky cutting past the right hand intersection to Kaiate falls where the name changes to Upper Papamoa Rd, until basicly it's higest point and travel down slightly to the unsigned gravel intersection to the left (approx S 37 45.854 E 176 15.722 off a map). Radio equipment and a Vodaphone cellsite would have been visible on your approach, but from memory are not visible from the parking area. From Te Puke, travel up Te Puke Quarry Road and it becomes Upper Papamoa Road, the gravel intersection is to your right near the top of the ridge.

Once parked, there are two gates, the left going through a paddock without a formed track and up to the radio sites, the right (with the DOC sign on it's right) has a formed track, follow the formed track, it is easier.

The bush section of the track has recently been re-marked and is very easy to follow. At the end of the initial formed track, watch for markers on the fence line taking you in to the first trig (which fortunately is the end of the hard start). Enjoy the views from the trig, unfortunately the Otawa trig is overgrown and has limited views.

Once you locate the Trig, the cache is hidden in some vegetation, you will need to climb into a growth and look back towards the trig, the cache is not at ground level. Please be careful replacing the cache, the container could easily be damaged if forced back into it's hiding place.

You might like to consider doing Kaiate Falls on the way to or from this cache, and also The Rock , which is on the track in.

The cache is a 1.25 litre plastic container painted green. The initial cache contains; A bar of Caramello chocolate, a Glo stick, a calculator, a roll of sellotape, a yo-yo and 5m of 120kg breaking strain UV stable black nylon cord.
