Collingwood is a small coastal town in Golden Bay.
The town was originally named Gibbstown after William Gibbs, but was later renamed Collingwood for Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood, Lord Nelson's second-in-command at the Battle of Trafalgar. A small goldrush caused a rapid but brief rise in population in 1857. As a result of this the town was proposed as the capital of New Zealand. This fate eventually went to Wellington.

Its amazing to think what would have happened to the surrounding region if the gold hadn't run out and this had become the capital of New Zealand. Picture the Aorere Valley as the Hutt Valley.

A lucky escape for the mainland I guess.

Enjoy.
