SALEM Lutheran. Church.
According to records the building that is to become Salem Lutheran Church was built in 1844 as a Methodist church. At the time of completion the cost of the building and furniture totaled $2200.00
A larger church was later built at Angaston in 1853 this building to day is known as Zion Lutheran Church.
It would appear that the membership declined at Penrice as references that do appear in the Methodist reports “Sunday School recommenced at Penrice in 1892” Also that the Salvation Army held Sunday school at Penrice as well.
In March 1906 it was reported that the Salvation Army was relinquishing the building and suggested that the Congregational Church take over.
In 1910 the Methodists were contemplating pulling down the Penrice Church and carting the stone to Angaston to build a hall.
In April 1911 the Congregationals purchased the building for $200, in 1917 services decreased and finally were suspended.
The Building was sold to the Lutherans in 1919 for $240 furnishings were sold separately.
It is interesting to read that the members paid $40 off the capital, $140 was borrowed at 5% interest and another $60 was borrow from Synod interest free and was paid off in 1951 (remember these were hard times).
A bell was purchased for $2.00 in 1922
Roof and ceiling repairs was carried out in 1922 for $181.11. All prices was in pounds and converted to dollars for this log
It is suggested that this little church is the second oldest church in South Australia, the first being the Union Chapel over the hill toward Angaston. The Salem Penrice Church is the only one still in use as a church from that era.
The unusual cache is small with a note pad, no room for swaps, Please bring you favorite writing tool.
The cache was placed from the footpath so there is no need to enter the property.
Remember church services are still held every Sunday so plenty of churches going mugglers around on Sundays avoid if possible, stealth is the order of the day.
From Monday to Friday you can experience high school students coming and going in the morning and in the afternoon, more mugglers! Again stealth required
Please return the cache to the place you found it including any camo.
Good luck
Note in the photograph one of the pretty ladies out the front of the church was Mrs. Grandee the cross on the front of the church was affixed by Mr. grandee.
