The West Wallsend Colliery was established by the West Wallsend
Coal Company, which was formed in Sydney in 1885. The same year,
the company acquired almost 3,000 acres of land at Wallsend and a
colliery was established to mine the celebrated Borehole Seam.
The colliery continued to operate until September 1923.
Following the closure, the then owners, arranged for all surface
works, except for the headframe to be dismantled. The headframe is
believed to be the first steel headframe constructed in
Australia.
In 1977, 54 years after the mine closure, the headframe was
partially relocated from West Wallsend to a new mining museum at
Freemans Waterhole. In 2007, after the close of the Freemans
Waterhole museum, plans were made for it to be moved to Argenton
next to the Newcastle Mines Rescue Station.
The headframe now stands as a tribute to our mining heritage in
the Newcastle and Hunter Coalfields.
The cache is a small 200ml Grey Sistema Container. It contains a
log and a pencil.
