An easy cache in my home town, Winton.
This picnic stop was once indicated by a sign post saying "rest area". A few of the locals didn't like the connotations about "resting", as it is located just out of the Winton cemetery. The sign was later changed to the blue one you will find now.
Winton may seem like any other small southern town but it has some interesting history. At the co-ordinates S46 07.702 E168 19.528 you will find the grave of Minnie Dean, the only woman to ever be hanged in New Zealand. Minnie was accused of murdering babies with hat pins for profit. You can find more information at this website (visit link)
On the 10th of February 2009 a headstone was placed at her grave (the second one in two weeks! an unofficial one mysteriously appeared at the end of January), until then the grave had been unmarked. You may remember this on the news. Local myth said that it could be found by looking for "the only spot where the grass never grows". Now you can say you've visited the notorious Minnie Dean.
This micro contains one half of the co-ordinates for "Heart of Southland" (GC1Q2VG). You will also find the usual log and pencil (I think).
Happy caching.
