From 1918 until 1935 freight and passenger trains used to run through the Adelaide Hills to Mt Pleasant via Mt Torrens and Birdwood.
Remnants of the old line still remain and this bridge is probably the most prominent reminder of those days gone by.
In March 2024 it was announced that the AMY GILLETT RAIL TRAIL cycle path will be extended to Birdwood, crossing this bridge. The cache should not be impacted by the path but do be aware that construction works may be taking place.
Best access is from the north western corner (ie scramble up the bank on the left of the photo).
