I have placed the cache away from the area of the cairn, but not far. It is as close as I could get it the location in which I first caught the school bus at the age of 5, on route to Methven Primary. This was a reasonable walk/bike from our home and it was some years before the bus routes changed allowing us to catch the bus at the farm gate.
In 1896, 9035 acres of the Highbank run in Canterbury was sold to the Government for closer settlement, and on June 26 of that year a ballot was held for 82 leasehold sections.
The placement of this cache marks the centennial of that ballot and celebrates the life and times of the Highbank District for 100yrs and for many years to come.
The village once consisted of a store, Post office, Telephone exchange office, Church, School, Library, Tennis courts, Cemetery, Red Cross Branch and more. Look out into the farmlands from this site (a complete 360 degrees) and imagine the community that once existed here.
The cache itself commemorates and celebrates the community that still exists after the village buildings have all but gone – as is clearly demonstrated by the creation of the cairn and the development of the site in which it is placed. NB. The old school remains as the Community Hall and the tennis court remains in use by the club.
