A 50 cal ammo can at Mustang Peak(elev 2272') in Henry Coe
State park
Image
This cache sports amazing views of the park and beyond. It is
placed 88 feet east of the BM on the summit. Plan your final ascent
path as you approach the peak. The easiest access we found was to
head east about 100 feet and then up through a larger break in the
brush.
This is a strenuous and very long hike or ride from any of the
entrances. The easiest access (easy is relative in this case)is
from the Bell Station entrance from which it is approximately a 34
mile round trip with an elevation gain of ~5700'. If you enter from
any other entrance you will have to cross at least two ridges and
should plan on at least a two day trip maybe three. I'll add more
trail mileage and elevation info here
soon.
On Backcountry Weekend each year you can drive to
Orestimba Corral and shorten the trip to 8 miles round trip. This
took us about 5 hours with a long lunch break at the summit. There
is shade along county line road but not a lot in the final miles.
Even in spring when this was placed the temperatures were in the
80s so bring plenty of water, sunscreen and a good hat to avoid
getting burned.
This cache is #2 in my Bay Area Calibration Point series since the
Benchmark is part of the HPGN program.
The cache contains some moleskin, a 16 oz bottle of water, a
26x1.95 inner tube and numerous geocoins(EVC, Found It, CA Micro,
GAA, plus many others) and other swag(pins, sig items and
buttons).
FTF prize is a Moun10Bike V3 geocoin(#520). You can keep it or
trade it but it must not be sold.
Big congratulations go out to ltleelim on a very cool FTF and his
first Moun10Bike coin.
