If it wasn't for ... Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Geodes: I've had to archive one of the prelims for this one, so I'd better archive it too - I was never too happy with it after its original location became untenable. I'll leave the cache there until Christmas so anyone who has the co-ords can still log it.

Geocache Description:

The posted coordinates for this cache are bogus - do not go there.
It is the intersection of Whitehorse and Elgar Roads and if you do
go there you'll probably be squashed!

Geodes' eleventh cache is one of a series that takes in some of the cute little parks around the Box Hill area of eastern Melbourne

You see it mentioned in the logs all the time - "If it wasn't for geocaching, I would never have visited or known about this place" - or words to that effect. Well, as I was heading home from work one day, I happened to glance across at a little park that I was passing, and realized that I had glanced across at that same little park many times over a period of nearly 20 yrs, and still didn't know what was behind the mysterious and interesting looking object part way along it. I resolved then and there, that I would make it a point to check out that little park - and a number of others that fell into the same category - and that I might as well make a short series of caches out of them. I also thought I might spice it up a little by finishing off with a puzzle.

All the caches in this series are within a few kilometres of each other, and lie in the area which I traverse while commuting to and from work each day - this is roughly the area between Nunawading and Hawthorn bounded by Springfield Rd to the north and Canterbury Rd to the south.

The preliminary caches which you will need to visit to obtain the clues for this one are -

Leafy Stroll
Grassy Meander
Bushy Wander and
Surrey Dive

Each cache contains 2 clues (on one piece of card about 30mm square) which you will need to substitute into the coordinates below - make sure you remember to look for them and replace them. The solution is not a straightforward substitution of numbers - however I don't think it should prove too difficult, and you (hopefully) should be able to do it "in the field" (if not, use the hint).

The final cache is located at

1-Feb-07
Note that I've needed to move the cache slightly due to deterioration of its old cover. You will now need to offset your calculated coordinates slightly - subtract .016 from your South coord and subtract .013 from your East coord. The cache has been moved 34m NW from its original location.

23-Jun-08
Unfortunately, as the cache has been muggled twice in its replacement spot, I've moved it once again. It's remarkably difficult to find half decent hiding spots in some of these neatly manicured inner suburban parks so, if it disappears from here, I'll have to archive it. You will now need to offset the coordinates you have calculated by the following amounts - subtract .044 from your South coord and subtract .022 from your East coord. The cache has been moved 88m NNW from its original location.

It is now a film canister

All of these locations have playgrounds and are doggie-friendly, so bring the family and enjoy getting a few easy ones

Good Luck!
