Geocache Description:

I placed this cache on Saturday, March 4, 2006. This, the 230-year anniversary to the day of the 83rd campsite of the famous, five-month journey of Juan Bautista de Anza and his expedition to San Francisco from Sonora, Mexico. On March 4, 1776, they stopped for a night here along our Salinas River.

It’s not hard to imagine how much of a campsite this must have been with Anza, three Franciscan priests and their servants, a commissary, a lieutenant, a sergeant, 28 soldiers, the wives of the sergeant and soldiers, 136 colonists (men, women, and children), 20 muleteers, three vaqueros (cowboys), and three Indian interpreters. Additionally, there were 695 horses and mules, and 355 beef cattle.

"Ahead went four soldiers, as scouts to show the road. Leading the vanguard went the commander, and then I came. Behind me followed the people, men, women, and children, and the soldiers who went escorting and caring for their families. The lieutenant with the rear guard concluded the train. Behind him the pack mules usually followed; after them came the loose riding animals; and finally all the cattle, so that altogether they made up a very long procession." Padre Font's October 22, 1775, diary entry
